In the recent Star Show with DBSK as guests while everyone was going gaga over their messages to their future wife, the one and foremost segment I was interested in was actually the first and last few minutes where they talked about their time in Japan. It's the thing that defines my love for them. Without even knowing the content in the last few minutes, as the atmosphere became solemn we knew it was serious talk between the host (who is the actor to this popular period drama I can't remember right now) and DBSK.
Coincidentally over the weekend I had the chance to watch the DVD History in Japan 1 which I ordered before I left for HB and it arrived while I was away. How should I say it. Even the DVD was about DBSK, it was somewhat painful to watch. The year when they were at the peak of their popularity in Korea they went to Japan and greeted by a few hundreds of fans. They debuted with the song "Stay with me Tonight." Honestly, it's not a great debut song. In fact I hate it. There was this event where the young men had to wear these white oversized lobster tails suit (for the lack of a better term) and came on stage to a small audience. They stood there in these ridiculous outfits greeting to the fans, letting the wind blew the flowy garments shaping their package in front of the audience. Okay maybe I was being perverted but seriously I would be cursing at the designer if I was made to wear those outfits. At any rate they being the performers continued the show with singing and dancing. I cringed because they had to sing and danced in those outfits. Maybe it was just me but I found this segment the most painful to watch.
Second was a-nation. If there's a way to measure their popularity, it's none other than a-nation. It's also a way to gain new fans which is precisely the reason why they have to participate every year. Being fresh and new, it wasn't unexpected to have very few fans. In fact in the whole vast audience I saw a handful of people waving balloons and responding to their singing and dancing. Their singing, dancing and jumping seemed lost in this vast mass of an audience who had no idea who they were. I wonder how it felt like to perform with a scene like that. It's like a comedian who tells a joke but nobody laughs. But the show must go on. Even if things didn't look too encouraging, performers had to push through to the end. A-nation in 06 was a big improvement. In fact I saw quite a mass of audience responding to them when they greeted. They also felt less awkward on stage. The year where they looked most confident was of course 07. They could even hear the audience cheer for them. I saw smiles on their faces. For the first time on stage of a-nation, they actually looked like they enjoyed it and truly had fun.
Back to the last couple of minutes of the Star Show segment. Jae talked about the year of 2006 when the swept a good number of awards then came to Japan and reverted back to an amateur group singing before 100 audience. Yunho started to speak of how hard it was that they wanted to do a lot of thing but couldn't, that he was envious of other Hallyu stars who got recognition (more so without efforts like they did.) Looking at Yunho I could see that he was trying to hold his tears. It must be a period where their pride got hit pretty hard. How could their pride not got crushed in such extreme shift of mentality, one on top of everything while other at the very bottom of everything. To simply put by Jae, "if we don't have that switch we would go crazy." Now I understand why Junsu and Yoochun cried on stage while singing "Proud". It was the turning point for them. It was the time when they felt things were going the right direction and that their efforts finally began to pay off.
Japan was a good experience for them and they know that. Now they've been through both worlds. One world was a world where they've achieved fame and popularity overnight. One world is a world where they've started from scratch and worked their way to the top. Victory only tastes so sweet when a lot of efforts were involved in the process and there was hardship to achieve that very success. Being the grateful people that they are I'm sure they treasure the achievements they had in Korean but even more so to the achievements they've worked hard for in Japan. The days of living dangerously seem to be over. Their experiences were not the only ones but I talk about them because I only see them.
This will probably be my last cheesy post about them and may be last public post period. I began to feel like I'm repeating these things like a mantra. Then again I also lied about not doing polls again. At any rate, I can only wish them to shine even brighter and brighter for they're like little jewels I love, like that of a family, like the little brothers I never had. May the force be with DBSK.

i jst finished watching star show and yes my fav part was the end. it was TO shrt!
and i gt really teary :( yes im a loser! it mst be hard on them. their popularity is really diff in Korea and Japan.
honestly, their kind hearts and effort is the reason i respect them so much.
Toho Fighting!
I was really touched too when I watched that portion of Star King. If I were in that situation, I doubt if I'd be able to make it. The boys are just... really really strong people. It takes a lot of strength to get through an experience like that. ♥♥♥
lol i digress so much. But that's what I love about them. They have a distinct humility to them that is completely lost to their contemporaries of similar standing in the music industry. Because they were humbled so much, they didn't lose themselves; they're still like real, down-to-earth people. Like my friend says, 'they didn't let it get to their heads.' So, even though it was bitter for them, I am thankful for it. They are amazing because of it. :D
I'm really tired right now so I can't get my brain together to say anything meaningful... but thank you!! Couldn't agree more!
AND I WILL FOREVER BE INDEBTED TO JAE FOR BRINGING SMEX!Chun back teeheeheehee
I originally made it as an explanation for Chun's scary Yamaha!hair but it fits numerous circumstances now I guess... lol~
yesterday, i went back to watch a few of their videos when they first started out in japan with their "welfare japanese" as my friend kindly puts it...
i'm so proud of what they have accomplished and all the bridges they have crossed through their hard work. <3
*runs off to watch HIJ again*
arigatou!
And I noticed Ho getting emotional too. I was sort of confused when the MC asked Jae to give the concluding "future plans" speech rather than leader-sshi, but than the camera panned to him and he looked almost teary *pets*
When I watched their "Proud" performance in FiTB I cried with Yoochun adn totally lost it when Junsu cried. I knew why they were crying...all those days/nights singing infront of a handful of people, the sacrfices they made, leaving Korea...it all paid off. Because they've made it.
I have so much respect and love for these boys.
Thank you for such a lovely, meaningful post.
stay with me tonight is not a bad song, just that it's not good enough to gain attention XD
If only they started with BEGIN XD whahaha
MY FAVORITE XD
but japan was a good experience, because now they stayed..how to express it...normal. they don't act like some diva stars who gained the fame over night
I felt the same things as u did. They've worked their way up from the bottom, and we as fans r really proud of them. Regardless of their fame now, they remain humble. That's the true quality of a star... :)
*BRAVO!
that was *THUMBS UP!
seriuosly DBSK is SO DAMN GOOD. going to japan and starting form scratch D: you know i told my mum and she gave me this face liek she didnt believe me or i was reading off a false source DD:
it seemed to be somehting really hard to do =\
GO YOU~
when i watched star show i felt so sad when they were talking about their experiences in the first years they were in japan.. you could see the sadness in their eyes when they were talking about it
i just know them for about 2 years now (but i became a 'hardcore' fan when i saw their five in the black concert about 1 year ago) so i dont really know how they began their career in japan.. but when i listened to them talking about this issue i felt like crying.. thinking about them wanting to give up i was so thankful for all the fans and all the support they got so they realise how much love they really recieve and deserve!
i'm just happy that they are the person they are now because this is why we love them <3
TVXQ hwaiting~!!
Dong Bang Shin Ki Hwaiting!!
however, no offence intended, i bet to differ with ur statement at the end of all heartaches:
One world was a world where they've achieved fame and popularity overnight. One world is a world where they've started from scratch and worked their way to the top.
i'm not exactly sure which is which, but in any case i think (IMO) that our boys, in either of the countries, have started from scratch, worked extremely hard, and then finally get to the top. if they were shot to fame overnight, i do not think they would have come this far, or more particularly, go very far. :)
just my 2 cents worth. ^^
i do agree that that their success in Japan was hard earned, but they really did deserve it for they have improved so much since they started out. their perseverance and humility never really impressed me and im just really proud of the success they now have.
Now, their Korean debut was bit different. They got loved quickly. Now we observe similar thing with new band, ShinEE. They had that pretty huge fanbase even before debuting. And now people go all crazy about them. i don't mean it's bad, but real taste of winning over audience is like what DBSK did in Japan.
peace! <3
Thanks for sharing this.
Do more polls, i love them~ they are so fun! hehe, *waits for private posts* :p
it made me think...here in Israel, we have a fanclub and all...but it's so hard to poll new fans into it...so hard, i wish DBSK would go out to the world, i've never seen a band like this, they, they are just amazing, with the greatest personality, each one of them. i love them so much...and it makes me fell sad knowing they are so unreachable.
After watching Star Show I was thinking about it too.. and I have similar thoughts :) It made me all sad thinking how hard their lifes are and how many difficulties they had to overcome.. but it makes me extremely happy that they did! They're stronger and better people now ^^ I think those expiriences were necessary.. thanks to that hard time, succes hadn't gone to their heads ^^' I'm really proud of them and respect them ^^ Now I understand fully why they were so motional durin final stage of FitB tour ^^' Now it can only be better ne?
oh.. and I think that it wasn't their fault that at the begining they haven't got many fans... I think it was mostly Avex's fault.. because they gave them not very good songs... Maybe if they had better songs they would gain popularity faster ^^' but with that what they had back ten they did great :)after reading this enty I realized that I forgot to watch History in Japan 1 so I made up yesterday... and I felt embarassed too... I almost couldn't watch it... those outfits... T__T and only few people on a-nation cheering for them T__T
really sorry for my english, but it's not my first and I' still learning ^^'
btw.. could I add you to my f-list? I'm very interested in what you write and think about Dong Bang boys.. and not only about them ^^
THE EVER JAEHO GENIUS AJUMMA! :3
*blowshorn*
:D ilusm, for spreading the jaeho love and for contributing to the looove! :D THAAAANKS! <3
I agree with you completely. After watching the show, i felt even more proud of the boys. I duno...this is the first time that i have felt so much for a group of singers. Like...for some reason i feel as if they're REAL (if you get what i mean), that they are human beings who suffer too. All their hardships just make me love them even more.
Mmm can i friend you? o.O you seem to be a very great Yunjae fan hehe i HEART your icon =D
